I previously installed a wireless keyboard and mouse on my Toshiba 1805S laptop. I needed to work on it as a laptop instead of being hooked to a monitor and keyboard. The laptop keyboard would not work at all with this wireless keyboard and mouse installed. So I uninstalled it assuming I would reinstall it later. That screwed everything up apparently.
When I rebooted it after uninstalling the wireless keyboard and mouse, my colors were all screwed up and a lot of things weren't working. After several trips to the net and even a phone call for help, I managed to restore from the C:\ with scanreg /restore because SYSTEM RESTORE had disappeared. Everything was back to normal except that when booting up sometimes, I would get an MSGSRV32.exe error. After closing it, my desktop would load at the same time I was getting a setupx.dll error. If this group of errors doesn't happen on startup, then it will happen when I get on the internet. If I happen to make a change in MSCONFIG and I restart, I get that group of errors on startup and my desktop doesn't load. When I do ctrl-alt-del, nothing is running, not even Explorer. When this happens, I have to do scanreg /restore again and the computer works fine again. Reformatting the hard drive or even reinstalling without reformatting is not an option. I have some very important software that I can't risk losing or are unable to reinstall it after a reformat. I just can't trust a backup right now until I have the CD in my hand to reinstall the software. Any help with these problems would be greatly appreciated. I figure there's one core reason I'm getting these different problems all at the same time right after I uninstalled that keyboard and mouse. Thanks. |

Hello and welcome to TSF
This can occur if the Setupx.dll file is damaged/corrupt. Try this Click Start>Search, and then click For Files and Folders. In the Search for files or folders named box, type setupx.dll, click Local Hard Drives in the Look in box, and then press ENTER. Right-click the Setupx.dll file, click Rename, type setupx.old, and then press ENTER. Extract a new copy of the Setupx.dll file to your computer from your windows cd.

I don't have a windows cd. I got a configuration/recovery cd that came with the computer. I can't seem to extract that particular file from the Toshiba cd. I can't find it on the internet either. Is there anywhere else I could get a new file?

Another option is to slave the hard drive on another system and attempt it that way.

Well you can do it with a 2.5 inch to 3.5 Hard Drive adapter for Laptop
.....but ok we wont attempt that. Did you try to over write the file? Just drop it in the folder and when its says there is an exisitng file there do you want to over write say yes. I dont see any other way for "you" to do this. You may have to take it to your local tech shop. Tried system restore Quote:

Continued from [resolved] Shockwave installer won't go away
Put the new setupx.dll file somewhere memorable (such as c:\repairs) and open up the Pocket Killbox. Select the original setupx.dll file in the first section, and pick the option "Replace on Reboot" - make sure "Use Dummy" is unticked. When you selected the "Replace" option, another text bar should have appeared below where you enter the file you want replacing - put the new file you want to replace the old one in here. Click the delete button and it should come up with a question "All listed Files will be Deleted on Next Reboot - Yes/No" click Yes and close Killbox, then restart your computer. Hopefully this should sort the problem.

Oh well. It seemed like a good idea. Unfortunately it didn't work. Had to do a system restore. But it did get rid of that pesky installer on my desktop. Thank you very much for all your help!
