Confused Weird hanging issues

Hi everyone!
My OS is Win98, and I'm having weird hanging problems... They happen in different situations, but I've got the feeling they all have the same cause. The hanging usually lasts for 1mn in these situations:
- while browsing. Connection is fine, but every 5mn or so, all web browsers just halt for a minute (nothing happens, no requests sent), then get back to work all at the same time.
- At startup: in the middle of the launch of the programs of the taskbar. The procedure just stops for a minute, then resumes back to normal.
- Sometimes on exiting IE: the system doesn't open or launch anything for a minute (start button ineffective).
- after erasing a big number of files: same symptoms.
- Worse: sometimes, while opening the workstation, the system tries to display the hard disks, doesn't manage, then freezes altogether (pointer freezes, ctr-alt-del ineffective). It happens as well while loading files from any software.

I'm really getting desperate as all this happens more and more often!
Thanks for reading and thanks for your help!

You might have a virus

From what you just described you might have a virus on your computer that is infecting your files and pretty soon it may damage your whole computer. you might want to get McAfee, or Norton virusscan. Do not use any free virusscan software because it will not work. if the problem persist, you might want to back up all your important information on your computer and recover or reinstall your whole computer.

Oh, I ran a few antiviruses, and they don't seem to come up with anything... Adwares/Spywares either, that's the whole mystery.
I've been suspecting the msgsrv32.exe module (it seems to be coordinating all the stuff relating to loading files in the background). Could it be faulty?
Thanks!

My System

Send a message via MSN to linderman
Idea

hello:

download counterspy its free 15 trial version / i bet that will find plenty of boogy men

also download adaware SE / free personal version

you must run multiple scanners to get them all !!!! no one or even two spyware scanners get the whole job done / but you choose which does the best job :) I think I already know the answer to that one !!!

sounds like spyware / big time

let us know how you progress / if you are spyware free then we can proceed from there

regards

joe

Virus scans found system squeaky clean... And the problems are still thriving! I really think it's due to something deep down in the system (the strange hanging at mid startup, the total freeze when displaying a window). I've had a few problems in the past, but this one beats them all!
I'll run Scandisk now, see what happens...

I might have a clue for you out there, if it ever means anything: It looks like it's got to do with the modem, because I tried to reboot my computer with the modem disconnected from the USB port, and startup went just fine (no hanging). Could the modem be responsible for the regular hanging while browsing on my navigators?
