mechanism #2 install message

hi,
I am trying to install windows 98 and/or Millenium. I am having this message come up from the boot floppy: "scanning pc bus using mechanism #2". I fdisked and formatted the drive with the command "start computer without cd rom support". After rebooting, I selected "start computer with cdrom support". It gets to the "mechanism #2" message and stops. What is happening to stop install of win98?
I have tried two cd rom drives and tried alternative master and slave configuration. The cd drive is recognized in setup.
thanks,
wadrum

My System

Shutdown and remove all PCI cards except for your video card. Also, if you have more than one optical drive, disconnect all but one of them.

See if you can install without a boot disk, try to boot from CD-Rom. If that doesn't work, take out your optical drive and clean it. Also, it could be that your boot disk or win98 CD is damaged.

By the way, do not get ME, it's honestly the most unstable Windows to date. (Worse than XP and 95).

If pulling the PCI cards didn't work...

Boot with the Win98 startup floppy.

Press keys: SHIFT + F5
Type: REN ASPI*.SYS ASPI*.S--

Then reboot. Select 1. for CDRom support.
There will be error messages that it can't find files, ignore them.
When finished it will show CD drive letter just above help line, (eg: Drive E: = )

With Drive E as an example:

Put your Win98 CD in the CD drive and type E:\SETUP
to install from CD drive.

I prefer a flat install that way I don't need the win98CD later for any changes.
You would type the following:

C:
md win98
cd win98
copy e:\win98\*.*
setup

Note: you might want to rename the aspi drivers back to original extensions afterwards if you use this startup floppy on other computers.
(REN ASPI*.S-- ASPI*.SYS).
