No Sound

For some strange reason, I've lost my sound (except for the modem dialling noise).

There is no speaker icon next to the time/date anymore

I have no volume control

Can anyone help please?

First step would be to check in Device Manager and see if the sound card has an error code listed. You might also try reinstalling your sound board drivers.

Also, inside control panel there is a icon titled "multimedia". Check which kinds of playback devices there are in there.

edit: I also agree that it may be a driver issue that you are facing

Many thanks Johnwill & Fox,

The device manager shows two drivers: A CD Audio Media Control (which I added. ) and Wave Device for Modem. That's all Folks.

In Multimedia it gives four options;
1,- Any device (Checked)
2,- Game Compatible Device,
3,- Voice Modem Wave #00 Line
4,- Voice Modem Wave #00 Handset

Same applies to both playback & recording.

Midi tab is grayed out.

Silly as it may sound, check your connections. secondly, take the lid off the machine and remove the sound card, then replace it making sure it is properly seated. Thirdly, go to device manager and delete the drivers for the sound card(not the modem), shut down and restart, if the computer does not reload the drivers, load them manually. If none of that works, I'd say the card is buggered.

Done that - no joy!

I've copied the make of the card HSP56 CMI8738/PCI-SX (HRT Audio Com),

Searched for driver, found several options in www.cmedia.com.

Downloading the first and latest option .... then we'll see what happens next.

Okay, got sound of sorts!

It will play a CD via RealPlayer, volume is low.

Still no windows sounds (.wav etc)

No speaker icon next to time/date on bottom task bar.

No volume control.

Your help is much appreciated.

So.....RealPlayer plays something, Windows Media Player gives this message:

Windows Media Player cannot play the file because there is a problem with your sound device. There may not be a sound device installed on your computer, it may be in use by another program, or it may not be functioning properly.

Any ideas guys?

Hiya

Try this:

Control Panel | Sounds and Audio (may just be Sounds). There should be an option for Place Volume Icon in Taskbar. Tick, apply and OK.

Then, when its there, rightclick on the icon, and choose Open Volume Control. Options | properties.

Make sure all the boxes are ticked, OK. Then, make sure none are muted, or lowered, and that the balences are all in the middle.

I'm facing a bad problem. I have lost the volume icon as well as all form of windows sound, but there is nothing wrong with the sound card itself as I manged to fiddle faddle with my Winamp settings and can play mp3s fine.

Upon inspection, the Multimedia properties of my driver (SiS 7018 aUDIO dRIVER) says that the driver is enabled but inactive due to an unknown problem. The playback device area is grayed out.
There are no crosses or exclamation marks next to any device in the Device Manager.

Any advice?

PS This is not a sound problem, but I have to ask anyway - shortly after this problem occured, I installed Internet Explorer Six, and suddenly, whenever I type in a forum, the words lag very badly...after I type, the vertical line moves very slowly across the screen and it is a long time before my message materialise on the screen. How do I fix this? It was never like this before. The scrolling is slow too.

I think I am going through the same problem. I don't think it has anything to do with sound card. Somebody suggested it probably has to do with enabling or disabling something at the BIOS
