COMCTL32.DLL error when loading WIN ME

I went over to a friend house today cause he said his computer was doing some weird stuff. I sat down and turned the computer on and it rans through the post-test stuff just fine. The Windows Background loaded but then a COMCTL32.DLL error loaded and I closed the error box and nothing really happens. It just sits there with the background. I ran scandisk through dos and a few errors were fixed but it loads the error again.

I then went into dos and checked his C: and everything is still there so nothing has been lost.

I tried to run ME in safemode and it still pops up with the error.

My question is what do I do so I can get it to load properly and then burn my friends stuff to CD and reformat the hard drive. I would normally just want it fixed but his HD was full of 'stuff' before this error occured.

Thanks for ANY help,
Brandon

comctl32.dll

Try this.

Using Search, search for COMCTL32.DLL

Identify the copy with the most recent date and rename any of the others.

Chances are your the computer is loading and older copy of the DLL and newer features are needed.
