limiting access to my computer

I have win98. I would like to know if there is a way to secure my computer when I am not around to prevent someone else in the house from using it. Is there a way to password the start up or lock the windows all together? I am not networked. Just a home PC. Thanks for any help. Ken

If you can access the bios there should be a place to add a password.

With this enabled the computer won't boot until the password is entered.

What kind of computer have you got? Is it like a HP or a home built type.

And welcome to Tech Support Forums kmeyer301...:D

There are several utilites out there. Try looking up seclock. It rubs at startup and closes all programs that are running. It also tells you if someone tried to get in and when.

The win2kpro cd will load as an upgrade, then you can log in as "administrator" and create a zillion restricted profiles for everyone to log on and play, then log on as admin and all of your control and special stuff is still there. I tell ya man, it works really great. Set a shortcut to your screen saver on your desk top and click it if you have to go to the bathroom. A password protected screen saver assumes the password of current log on, but if someone does it to you, administrator can still unlock the workstation. do it, do it, do it.

If did not want to buy anything extra you could just put a screensaver w/ a password on when you leave you computer and also put a boot password on your bios, cheap is better. You would be suprised at how good the 98 sreensaver w/ PW is at keeping people off your system. Although a Boot PW is a MUST because if they just reset your 'puter then they get in if you dont have that on .
