Upgraded from 95 to 98...nic problems!!

First, i would like to apologize if this thred has been already posted and have searched a few pages but could not find the topic that would help me!! Anyway, this person i am trying to help have ordered SBC Yahoo DSL and she has a HP Vectra (Old....very old PC!) and Win 95. In order for the equipment to work i had to install Win 98 but now NIC card does not work. I tried newer NIC's but it would not fit into the slot. So i am trying to find a driver for this NIC (Originally came with the computer) but i can't find it.....what i read from the NIC was:"BEL 0812-1X1T-05-0027 WM"

Can anyone please help with getting the right drivers for this nic to work on Win 98?

Thank you

Is the nic card identified in the device manager? And are the proper network applications installed in windows setup? Does the internet connection wizard report any issues?

Thank you,

In the device manager the PC Ethernet adapter has a yellow question mark. When i try to install the SBC DSL modem the installation won't continue because it can not detect a NIC...altough the ethernet light on the modem went on when i connected it.

And i did try reinstalling the driver from Win98 CD but no help !

Is the adapter so old it has jumpers or dip switches on it? If so you will need to set those up to match the settings windows assigns.

My System

What model Vectra? Is it an on-board nic (part of the motherboard) or is it an add-on card (if so, white slot? black slot?)

Yes, it is a build-in NIC card. It is a HP Vectra.....and i think that's it. It's a very old computer because no newer NIC cards would fit in either black or white slots.

Since it's onboard, HP may still have the drivers. Go to www.hp.com, and check out the support section. You should be able to plug in your model number, and get the Win98 drivers for the on-board NIC.

If this does not work you should be able to purchase a network card for under $20 and just disable the onboard NIC.

Then just load the drivers for the new card.

If you have a USB port, might be able to run a USB NIC, in fact some DSL companies give you a free one in the kit (I guess you already checked the kit?). I suppose you've already checked www.driversguide.com for the drivers.

The white slots should be PCI slots. I would go with that before usb. Usb does not always work well in 98.

It doesn't matter how old the computer is. You can definitely find a NIC for it. You can find a NIC for ANY computer (well -- made within the last 10 or 15 years), and this one probably just has ISA or PCI slots. That's probably the easiest thing to try. NICs cost nothing these days.

The model number you mentioned seems to belong to a Belfuse (list of similar parts at http://www.belfuse.com/ProdList-MagJ...=BelPartNumber), but if it's an OEM product you probably won't be able to find drivers there. They will be hard to find from anyone, including HP, but HP may be your best bet.

Here's the spec sheet on almost what you have (0812-1X1T-03). I know it doesn't help, but it at least gives people an idea of what we're talking about.

Here's a hint for you, though. Apparently the Dell OptiPlex GX150 uses almost the same exact network card (the 03 rather than the 05). Most likely if you find a network driver that works with that it will work with yours.

A lot of people have network card troubles when upgrading from 95 to 98. I had to upgrade my driver, and actually ended up ultimately replacing the NIC because it never really liked 98.

I tried to add this as an edit to the actual post, so as not to mislead anyone but apparently I missed the "30 minute" cutoff for editing posts. In my opinion that is not a good rule. Just make sure the post says "edited by" and there's no problem.

ANYWAY:

[edit: I wasn't quite paying attention. The Belfuse thing seems to be a "connector module." Do you have the part no for the actual NIC? I believe this is just the jack thing...so ignore the stuff above about the Dell.]

Can you post the model # of this computer? I think we can help you better if we know exactly what we are giving you advice on.

I rebuilt an old Vectra for my daughter and it definately has PCI slots that you can plug a NIC into,I wont be able to get to this computer for about 10 days but if this thread is still live I will pull it apart and reply.
Can you post the make and model of the NIC's you were trying to install as they should fit.
