Control panel icons won't open among other things...
I have no idea what is wrong. Several things won't work on my 98 SE comp:
Can't open Control Panel icons Can't open Display Properties via right-click on desktop Can't open Network Properties in Network Neighborhood Shut Down or Restart option does nothing. Have to press the power button so it will shut down. I receive no error messages or anything. There may be some other problems as well that I haven't discovered yet. Strangely though, I can open the .cpl files themselves and all of them work. And lastly if I try to log in as a guest or try to create a new user account the Taskbar doesn't come up. I've tried reinstalling Windows (over top of the existing one) and that didn't fix it. It's also not fixed in safe mode. Deselecting all of the boxes in selective startup in msconfig doesn't fix it either. I really don't want to have to format the HD because I have some important stuff on it. If you need any more info please instruct and I'll be happy to provide it. |

I managed to fix it, heheh. Sorry if I wasted anyone's time.
Used Trend Micro's HouseCall Virus scan and it removed the Opaserv Worm. Also downloaded the security patch from Microsoft and now things work. Oh well, maybe this will be of some use to someone else. |

No problem, we are glad you got it sorted out.
Heres some other programs you may want to check out and run on your system. Download / Install / Update / and Run: Adaware SE check for any updates before running it. Get the plug-in for fixing VX2 variants. You can download it at this SITE To run this tool, install to the hard drive, then open Ad-aware->Add-ons and select VX2 Cleaner. Then click Run Tool and OK to start it. If it's clean, it will say Status System Clean. Otherwise, you will have to click on the Clean button to remove the VX2 infection. Download and install Spybot S&D . Run Spybot and click on the 'Search for Updates' button. Install any updates that are available. Next click on the 'Check for Problems' button. Let it run the scan. If it finds something, check all those in RED and hit the Fix Selected Problems button. Exit Spybot. If you keep getting the DSO Exploit entries, even after you updated Windows and fixed them, then download the Spybot DSO Exploit Fix and install it over the current Spybot installation.

Thanks for the reply. I have AdAware already and I did run it. I'm generally very good at keeping the comps secure but this one kind've slipped through somehow. Have a Firewall installed as well. I have Norton 2005 but I've been too lazy to install it on this comp. Guess that's what I get, lol. I suppose I better get to it..

AVG is better than Norton in my opinion (and unfortunately, an opinion is all you can get really), mainly because it's free, definition files seem to be updated almost every day and it's got a very low system profile (ie it doesn't make your system chug like Norton often does)
