Cry Driver update problem

I run Win98SE & until a few hours ago had color display choices of up 32bit. Now hoever, I am down to a whopping 16 colors. I am only slightly computer savvy, so any answers you can offer will need to be in baby language, sorry.

I have a PC game I want to run that requires 3D hardware accelerator card - 100% Direct X 9.0b-compliant 32 MB video card & drivers in order to run. I think I have an NVIDIA GeForce256 VGA display driver already installed, yet it doesn't appear under the add/remove section. Under Device Mgr, it says I have a SiS 300 & it seems to think I have the best driver installed already. I tried going to NVIDIA, SiS, & Microsoft to download updated drivers & that's how I've ended up with only 16 colors.

Any help would be awfully appreciated.

How can I tell what I installed? I'm not sure where to look. I downloaded NVIDIA's nForceWin98ME driver option, but when I tried to select it using the update driver wizard, it said it was not compatible & did I want to use it even though they did not recommend it. I said yes & after restart I only had 16 colors. I had no idea how to undo it, so I went to SiS & under GPU Graphics Driver picked the SiS300/305 series for Win98 & downloaded it. I used the wizard to install it but other than a color change to my desktop & the driver listed under device mgr, I see no difference. Maybe I picked the wrong category? There is a choice (at SiS website) under Chipset software for an AGP (GART) driver (or for an 'other IDE & AGP drivers'). I seem to have lost my 'SVGA' color choices. Both driver updates required restarts which have been done. Does this help?
