Can't Defrag

Help!! I can't complete a defragging. I get part way through it and my computer freezes with this message: "Your program has caused a divide overflow problem". Does any one know what to do about this? I am using Windows 98 and I defrag in safe mode.

Hit F8 during boot and select Command Prompt Only, and then run SCANDISK from the command prompt.
