Very Weird

I am getting "runtime error 266" messages. After I am on the Internet for about a half hour I start getting 1-4 messages every time I open a new window. It keeps getting worse, the computer slows down, and I must restart. I have disabled error notification and script debugging and I have downloaded the latest Microsoft patch.

Run a memory test using Memtest86

Also Click Start>Run and type in msconfig click the Startup tab and look for Microsoft Update Kb891711, if listed take the check out of the box beside it, click Appy and reboot
This update has been causing alot of problems with 98/ME systems.

Edit*
Researching your issue seems to have something to do with Java.
Please read over these links
http://www.runtimeerror.com/cgi-bin/...num=1109120504

Go to Sun Java
and download 'JRE 5.0 Update 1 includes the JVM technology' - 'JRE for Windows'.
You might have to uninstall your current version of your JDK software. You will know if you try to download the new updated version because it will give you and error telling you that it detected a current version and to uninstall it. If no error appears, dowload will continue and you should not get any errors after that.

Report

In response to your directions I did the following:

1) Ran memtest V 3.2. No errors found

2) Looked in Startup Programs (msconfig) and Add/Remove, searching for Microsoft Update Kb891711. I could not find it. Here is a little background- I installed the update when it first came out and soon after started to get run time errors. I followed some posts about Runtime error 266 and some people thought the update had something to do with it so I removed it with add\remove. After the last MS update was posted, I updated everything listed for my computer, including Kb891711.

3) I couldn't download JRE 5.0 Update 1 (Or update 2). I have Java 2 Platform Standard Edition Ver 1.50 (Build 1.5.0_02-b09). About a week ago I did download something from Java that I found on a link on another forum, so I think I have the most current version.

4) I downloaded and installed Service Pack 6 for Visual Basic 6.0.

I am still getting Runtime Error 226. If you can think of anything else I will try it. Thank you for your help.

Hi Geekgirl- I do get a string of numbers and letters that change with each runtime error I receive. I just started up so I have not received any Runtime Errors yet. I am off to work now but, when I get home, I will post some of thest strings as I find them. Thanks for the quick comeback.

Runtime Errors

A run-time error, in general, is an error generated during the time at which the computer is running a software application and experiences an issue. Below is additional information and help in resolving an actual runtime error. If you are experiencing a different error message, please see our question and answer section for additional information and/or help relating to your specific error message.

Cause:

The runtime or run-time error message can be caused by:

1. Confliction with TSR or other running program
2. Software issue
3. Computer Virus
4. Memory issue

Solution:

Confliction with TSR or other running program

If you are encountering a runtime error message while in Windows or above ensure that the issue is not being caused by a third party program or TSR by end tasking all open programs. Additional information about TSRs and how to end task a TSR can be found on document CHTSR.

If, after end tasking all TSRs, you continue to experience the same issue and are running Windows 95 or Windows 98, verify that no utility or program is being loaded in the autoexec.bat / config.sys that is causing your issue by temporally renaming the files. To do this, follow the below instructions.

1. Boot to a MS-DOS prompt. Information on how to do this can be found on document CHDOS
2. Once at the MS-DOS prompt, type:

cd\ <press enter>
ren autoexec.bat autoexec.ch <press enter>
ren config.sys config.ch <press enter>

Once completed, reboot the computer.

Software issue

If your issue persists it is possible that the program, utility or game causing the runtime error may have issues. Verify through the developer's web site that all updates or patches that may be available have been downloaded and applied.

If no patches or updates are available, attempt to uninstall and/or reinstall the program that is causing the issue. If you are having a runtime error in your operating system, reinstall the operating system.

Computer virus

Because computer viruses are capable of tampering with the system settings / memory it is possible for a computer virus to generate a runtime error. If you are currently running a virus protection program on your computer ensure it has the latest updated patch or .dat file.

If you do not have a computer virus protection program it is recommended one be purchased or that a demo be temporarily downloaded to scan your computer hard disk drive for viruses.

Additional information about computer viruses can be found on our virus information page.

Memory issue

Finally, if you have followed all of the above recommendations, it is possible that you may be encountering a hardware / memory related issue. We recommend that you first contact the developer of the program causing the issue for any possible solutions. If no solutions are found, we recommend you contact the computer or motherboard manufacturer for additional recommendations and/or service.

A complete listing of computer-related companies can be found here.

OK- This took some time. I did everything except reinstall and rename the noted files. I didn't rename the files because my OS is ME, not Win98. I am still getting runtime 226 errors. I think I am at the point that I need to format my hard drive and reinstall. I thank you for your help- AT
