Error message on startup - help please

Hi guys

I did a disk defrag and when i exited all my icons (for word and stuff) were gone, I paniced and switched the computer off when I tried to switch it back on it asked for my wind 98 validation/security code (it has never done this before). I entered this and that was fine, it then came up with a error message saying Soundblaster Midi drive been disabled, click ok to continue. Which i did.

It then pops up and explorer error saying an illegal operation has been performed and the program must close (there is no program open, I haven't even got that far).

Can anyone please help, I have all my uni work on the computer and need to get into it.

in the run box type
sfc
and press enter
if you cannot get into the run box try running it from the dos prom'nt
