Display adapter issue

I was updating my parents Gateway G6-333c computer (Win 98 SE) with windows updates. I downloaded an update for IE6 and rebooted. After the reboot I only get 16 bit color and a message stating "Display adapter is not configured properly". I tried to work with device manager and disable anything that is entitled PCI or ISA and letting the computer find the driver through Add new hardware. Also Bareac failed to identify the monitor (Gateway monitor). How can I correct this problem? Thank you, Shawn.

If you go to this web page http://support.gateway.com/support/drivers/dlcenter.asp
and enter your serial # it should take you to a page were you can download the display driver for this computer. I would not worry to much about the monitor. It was not correct because of the display adapter problem. Post back if you don't get it working.

NO luck

I went to gateway and downloaded the device driver. When I install it I get this message "please insert Creative Sound Blaster Audio PCI 128D WDM Audio Driver Disk". Then it wants Win 98SE cd. Bottom line is I am getting nowhere. Suggestions?

does that puter have on- board video? no pci or agp card?
if so, you need the driver disk from the motherboard, and if not you will need the driver disk from the video card....if you dont have it, find out what video device it is and go to the homepage to download the drivers. after you make sure there arent any conflicts in your device manager, remove the yellows.
hopefully you dont need a bios update.

Yellow again in Device Manager

I removed the SoundBlaster from device manager. Reloaded the driver file and after restarting I still get yellow next to SB. Don't know if this helps but here is Belarc profile for my 'puter.

Update (good and bad)

Successfully installed SoundBlaster 128D. No longer getting "display adapter not configured properly" message. Sound is working again. Graphics however is a different story. I am still only given the generic 16 graphic option. Where to from here? Thanks, Shawn.

Poor graphics

I am still trying to figure out how to restore the graphics on my parents computer. Would the graphics card be the problem or something else? Need some direction please. Thanks.

hi..just to be clear...
you have on board video? you havent any seperate video card, in either a pci slot or any other slot on your motherboard?
and right now you dont have any yellow conflict symbols in your device manager, it looks clean?
and right now your sound is working?
and these problems came with your updates.....what exactly were your updates...?

Laugh

This is a long shot but there was an update that caused alot of havoc on some 98/ME machines.

Go to Add/Remove Programs and remove Windows Update Kb891711. Now Microsoft did not suggest removing this completely from your system but to stop it from running at boot which is located in the mscong/startup tab.
You can choose to do either or both. It's your call.

Its worth a shot to see if this is the culprit causing you problems. If it is not, and you remove it, you can always d/l it again.
