Win 98 shutdown screen corrupted

Hi,

I have just installed WIN98 on a laptop and when it shuts down the shutdown screen is partly corrupted at the bottom. Sometimes its vertical lines, other times its like a chessboard pattern. Does anyone know what causes this, and how to get rid of it?

there are certain .sys files in the C:\ directory or in the c:\windows directory. they are listed as follows

logo.sys
logos.sys
logow.sys

you can search for these and open them using MS PAINT or some other paint program. check to see if the image is distorted or anything. if not click save and then restart. should work.

does the machine still shut down properly in spite of this? If it does, my guess it's a monitor driver problem.

It may also be a native resolution issue. LCDs are capable of displaying many resolutions but have something else called a native resolution, which is the "true" resolution of the LCD panel. Displaying resolutions above it are impossible without using a "virtual desktop" and resolutions below it cause distortion. Some LCDs can do a good job and provide a decent picture by fuzzying the pixels. Others simply display the requested resolution but not at full screen. Others still will stretch the picture out and make a horrible mess of pixels and lines. When you are in Windows try lowering your resolution and see what it gives you.

Yes, There is a stretch feature in the BIOS which I turned off. The res for the screen is 1024 x 768, and the windows shutdown display is in 640 x 480 i think. However it displays fine apart from the bottom inch or so which is sometimes just close vertical lines (like every other pixel) or a hatch pattern. It does shutdown OK though, but I would like to get rid of this for selling the laptop.

these could just be artifacts from the vid card's memory flashing across the screen.

do they happen really fast?

mine does it too, but it's literally a blink.

I just figured it was faster than retyping my response and digging up the link to that reply. Next time I'll just assume everyone knows every shortcut these forums have.

Yes I know what you are refering to. This is just the bottom inch of the shutdown picture (the clouds with Win 98 etc.) which is affected.

here, virus scan this, and then put it into the c:\windows folder.

see if it is the file itself that's bad...

the file itself may be corrupted. download that attachment, and install into your windows directory.

and for future reference please use the edit function. TSF not like the double and tripple posts. it takes more space and it's not tidy. thank you.

or you could download the attachment, and use the compare tool that comes in the 98 cd's resource kit to compare them bit for bit.
