System Restore Problems

Help please someone, I somehow screwed up my Java and now I am having all sorts of problems. I already tried reinstalling it, uninstalling what was left of it, deleting it, updating it, and nothing seems to work.
So I figured OK I will just do a system restore. But first when I tried that it kept telling me there wasn't enough room to do a restore. I have a 30GB hard drive and about 20GB of it are free!!!! Regardless, I went in and uninstalled a bunch of programs that had been downloaded (games etc.) to make more room. My restore space is set to the max of about 2500.
Now when I try to restore, and there are plenty of points to chose from, it goes thru the motions like it is working but then after rebooting it says system could not be restored, with no explanation????

Hello and Welcome to TSF

Examine event logs for any system restore-related errors that could help you identify your problem. (Start->Settings->Control Panel->Administrative Tools->Event Viewer).

Thats my fault I apologize, you are in the correct forum

Try the System File checker

Click Start>Run and type in sfc
Use the scan for altered files option. You may need your Windows ME disc

Ok, I must be doing something wrong, I went to Start, Run and typed in sfc and I get an error message that says

Windows cannot find 'sfc'. You may have typed the name incorrectly in the Run dialog, or another open program cannot find a system file. To search for a file click Start then Search.

When I go to search and put in sfc, all I get are three files
default.sfc
default.sfc
SFC.DLL

Have you checked for viruses and spyware? This reminds me of a virus I have done battle with before. Sorry I do not remember which one it was.

No your not doing nothing wrong it is I. ME apparently does not have SFC .......sorry about that. Go with Terrister's suggestion and scan for viruses so we may rule that out.

Scan your pc with one of these free online scanners:
Panda ActiveScan
RAV AntiVirus
Housecall. Be sure to put a check the box beside AutoClean.

I did another reinstall and java seems to be working (I can load sites using Java) but I am still getting all kinds of weird errors that causes either exporer or IE to close. Not constantly like it was happening but definately more than should. Also, I still have no Java icon in my control panel. When I load a Java site, it comes up in my task bar tho.

Have you tried to repair IE. Go into Add/Remove Programs and locate Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 SP1 and Internet Tools. Highlight and click Add/Remove. When the other box pops up chose repair.

Please use these programs to make sure your system is clean

Download / Install / Update / and Run:
Adaware SE check for any updates before running it.
Get the plug-in for fixing VX2 variants. You can download it at this SITE
To run this tool, install to the hard drive, then open Ad-aware->Add-ons and select VX2 Cleaner. Then click Run Tool and OK to start it. If it's clean, it will say Status System Clean. Otherwise, you will have to click on the Clean button to remove the VX2 infection.

Download and install Spybot S&D . Run Spybot and click on the 'Search for Updates' button. Install any updates that are available. Next click on the 'Check for Problems' button. Let it run the scan. If it finds something, check all those in RED and hit the Fix Selected Problems button. Exit Spybot. If you keep getting the DSO Exploit entries, even after you updated Windows and fixed them, then download the Spybot DSO Exploit Fix and install it over the current Spybot installation.

Scan your pc with one of these free online scanners:
Panda ActiveScan
RAV AntiVirus
Housecall. Be sure to put a check the box beside AutoClean.

Have you tried doing the repairs while in safe mode? And also try running "System File Checker" (sfc) from safe mode. I find it hard to swallow that utility not being supported in ME. There might be an exception if the software is OEM version. It may also help to know who the computer and software vendor is.
