MSIE not working

My system was working well until I installed Turbo Tax. (I'm writing here since they want nothing to do with the problem.)

First, a tech helped me load the software from the CD I'm mailed each year. After installation the software failed to connect to the internet and I was unable to download updates. On my 4th call a tech told me the software I received was mislabeled and did not run on Win98.

In my previous calls I had been following their instructions trying to get the system to connect and download. One was to access their CD and click on the MSIE 6 setup file. The 4th tech told me he'd send a Win98 version and I should access the MSIE 6 setup and install. I did.

But, while MSIE opens, it cannot access a page. I notice at the bottom where the URL is listed it says: 'opening www.google.com', then 'opening www.www.gooogle.com'.

I have attempted to repair MSIE, I have tried to download the Win98 version and install, but it rejects all saying there is a more recent version installed.

Last I tried removing from the Add/Remove panel in the Control Panel.

Nothing.

I would appreciate any suggestions or thoughts. I'm at a loss. I do use Firefox as a regular browser, but MSIE is used to keep Windows updates.

Thanks for any thoughts/assistance.

I realize I should be more specific about the error message in MSIE. It is:
The page cannot be displayed

I also noticed while it attempts to open www.google.com, it then tries www.www.google.com.com, then www.www.google.com.net, then www.www.google.com.org.

If I input just google into the address bar it tries www.google.com, www.google.net, and www.google.edu and www.google.org then the same error message.

How do you access the internet? Dial-up? DSL? Cable?

Did you uninstall that software?

Did you try to repair using the Add/Remove Programs utility? Instead of trying to uninstall chose to repair.

I'm on dial-up. Today I'm going to look into DUN and see if I can repair, then uninstall and re-install.

I'll report back. Thanks for your comments.
