Compaq presario - Windows ME - boot problems

hiya. im hoping someone can help here cos im a bit lost. ive copied the first part of this from an invalid thread cos the guy seemed to have more or less the same problem.

a friend gave me a laptop (compaq presario 1700) to look at as it started behaving strangely and not recognising his cd/dvd-rom drive and now refuses to boot into the OS what-so-ever.

Used ME boot disk. started system. message: This driver is provided by Oak Technology, Inc. OTI-91X ATAPI CD-ROM device driver. Rev D91XV352 (C)Copyright Oak Technology Inc. 1987-1997. Device Name: MSC0001. No drives fournd, aborting installation.

the laptop then preparees to start until it displays this message:

"the diagnostic tools were successfully loaded to the Drive D.

Device driver not found: 'MSCD001'.
No valid CDROM device drivers selected

Press CTRL+ALT+DELETE to restart your computer.

There may be a problem with your CD-RoM. Check to make sure it is properly connected and restart your computer."

the problem with this is that if the CD-ROM drive is plugged in instead of the floppy, I am told that the system disk is invalid and to replace the disk and press any key.

I havent been able to get into the BIOS because it's password protected (and I seriously doubt that the owner will know the password at all).

Im stuck. can anyone please help.

these presarios are known for their cd drives puking out. try removing the battery and the ram, there should be an access compartment underneith, of course unplugged from the power supply, let it set for a half hour...then try it again...otherwise xp home is pretty reasonable..
