compaq won't restore

I got a compaq 5340 at a yard sale,it came with the restore cd's i tried to use them but it hangs on the second cd,it wont load 98se either,it worked when i got it home i dialed out with it 'now it wont do anything anyone think it's a bad H.D

If the drive is ok, and the diagnostics partition from compaq is still there, F10 will get you into bios, and utilities. may find something useful there. You can also still find handy browseable help at the compaq website for that machine. I've personally never liked the equipment, but I can't find fault with the documentation, drivers, utilities etc. available for the users.

Open the machine, make sure all of the cables, expansion cards, memory modules, etc., are firmly seated. Download the drive diagnostic from the disk manufacturer's website and run a surface scan. I'd also download one of these memory tests and test the memory.
