CD Burner Problems

Recently I had to have the hard drive on my computer (Acer 6140, P111) reformatted and Windows 98SE(Plus), along with all my other programs reinstalled. Everything about my computer works exceptionally well, except that my CD burner no longer works. The CD burner unit was installed in my computer only about two years ago and it is a Sony CD-RW Drive, Model #CRX225A. It will not recongnize that a CD disk has been inserted in the unit, and therefore will not proceed with the burning process.

I have tried unstalling the CD burner program and reinstalling it with no positive results. I have also tried using several different CD burner software programs (Nero & Ashampoo)to see if the burner would work with those programs----it will not. The same problem exists with the unit not recognizing that a disk has been inserted.

In addition, I have been provided instructions from my CD manufacturer (Sony) on unstalling the software and downloading a new driver, and reinstalling the software. This process did not work either, and my cd burner will still not recognize when I have a disk inserted into the unit.

Any information on where I might begin to further troubleshoot or solve this problem woud be appreciated.

This sounds almost exactly like the same problem I'm having. I also have a Sony CD-RW, though I don't know the model. Same thing happened to me, it worked fine for a while, then started making a lot of bad burns & then quit recognizing there were any disks in altogether. I've hit all the tech sites I can think of trying to find a solution, and have had a techie look at it & the best the could do was to tell me, "It would probably be cheaper to replace it then try to fix the problem". maybe they're right.. :x
