Windows ME Security Update Kb891711
Greeting everyone,
Usually when I install a Windows Security update, after installing, I've not noticed any trace of the update. I just assume that my system is now more secure. But the lastest security update included Kb891711. I noticed that after updating and rebooting, that when I do a control-Alt-Delete to view the running programs, there is Kb891711 listed with all the others. So then I went to my control panel and open the add/delete programs window and noticed that there is now an entry for "Windows Millennium Edition Kb891711 Update". This has not been the case after all the other security updates. This all seem unusual to me for a security update. Did I perform the update wrong or is this update different than all the others and this is normal? Thanks in advance for the input. Moxieman |

Hello moxieman and welcome to TSF
I have a few updates listed in my Add/Remove Programs, but not all are listed. I am sure you have not performed the update wrong. If you go to the Windows Update Site and view the "History" you will see what updates were successful and which were not. I do not have an answer for why some end up in these areas and some don't. My thoughts are that the ones that end up in the Add/Remove Programs are ones that replace prior updates. Like an update to an update. Sounds kinda silly how Microsoft would do this. They may also be ones that the user can chose to remove if they feel it is not needed. Again I think you installed the update just fine

Hi all,
Whilst we are on this topic, i have a question if you don't mind. A week ago i was having troubles getting onto windows interface, i phoned my normal tech, and he asked me what i was doing prior to the the trouble, i said, i downloaded a system update from the microsoft site, he told me that i shouldn't do that, he said its only for new machines only, is that true or false ? thanks Tuby |

You can read here. Microsoft Extends Windows 98 Support Lifecycle . graffixsphere You may want to try and Download WinsockFix and unzip it. Then double-click on it to run it. You can place it on a floppy from another computer since you can't connect from yours. RavenMind sorry but I never heard of your problem. Are you sure it's being successfully installed? Go to Windows Update Site and check the History.

Running 98SE
but the thread on this with that group is limited. I also noticed that now winmgt is also always running as an active process - never was before. I'm freezing between pages on net now. Also had blue screen appear giving me a stack warning (never had before, and checked it out and didn't appear plausible). I'm not trusting this update.

kb891711 - network card driver conflict
As others have seen problems with the kb891711 security update...
I recently installed the update on my laptop running winme, and was met with horrible system instability. I was able to backup and decided to start with a factory reinstall of the o/s and reinstall my applications. After reinstalling the o/s and downloading all of the winme updates (successfully), i tried to install drivers for my netgear wg511 wireless pcmcia card. Result.... blue screen of death! When I rebooted, if I stopped the kb891711 application in the task manager before the wireless card application had started, the system would boot alright. Otherwise, it would crash immediately. I have uninstalled the kb891711 update, and the system boots fine now with the wireless card installed. I was suprised to see the kb891711 application listed in the add/remove programs list (seems strange to have "optional" o/s updates... does this mean it's not well tested?), and suprised to see kb891711 listed as an application running immediately on bootup. |

A thank you and a big question...WHY?????
First i have to say thank you to everybody. Your posts solved a problem that got me to the point i wanted to throw the PC out the window. I recently got hit by spyware, adware, and trojans. After using about every removal program out there and still failure i decided to start clean and reinstall everything. Of course after restoring my PC to factory settings i had several updates to get. A couple of days ago i got all the updates and everything was fine. i used internet explorer more than usual actually. But for some reason a few hours ago i opened up IE and BAM i get "blue screen with error message 06:0200:0000082E". Then my PC acted as if it had every virus possible. At first i didnt know what was going on until i noticed everytime i opened IE it did this. Ive got on my lap top and came across this thread and noticed graffixsphere had the same problem and said he uninstalled the kb891711 security update. The problem seems to be fixed. I would have never known that was the problem since i got so many updates at once. So thank you very much!!!
Why would they give an update that screws your computer up like that?????? Last edited by xxpestixx; 03-13-2005 at 10:19 PM. |

I also got the "blue screen of death" every time I booted up. I did a ScanDisk, reloaded my OS, and still got the "blue Screen" on boot up. On bootup, McAfee was checking for "updates". After finding this forum, I went into Task Mgr, where I removed the Kb891711. I went into Control Panel, Add/Remove, and removed Kb891711. I even did a Search & found/removed it. I can now boot up & my PC works, but my ethernet card is "dead", no blinking lights. My BellSouth DSL modem does not work. I tried reloading the drivers for both the ethernet card & DSL modem, nothing. I called BellSouth Support, and they cannot determine the problem. I will upgrade to WinXP, should I get a new ethernet card? A friend is telling me to run a Virus Scan & run Spybot.
Thanks, LaTundra

Well it is sure nice to see some of you getting some positive results out of this thread.....I'm still tempted to contact Microsoft and ask them what o'l Billy is smoking these days, his ME update seems to cause havac
Maybe it's something that is being done purposely to force the consumer to start using XP

Hello, I have Kazaa Lite K++. My computer seems at times to work alright, the real problem is when I try to play my video downloads from kazaa lite or a song the whole screen gets "the blue screen of death" ie: 06 0200 0000082E. Could someone please tell me a way to fix the problem? I'm on windows me.
thanks... |

[quote=Geekgirl]That is not true, It is essential to keep your computer's operating system and programs in top condition. That means keeping up with applying patches, hotfixes and service packs. You are leaving your self vulnerable if you do not get the critical updates and service packs. ALL Windows Operating Systems need these. Microsoft will discontinue supporting Windows 98 and ME in the year 2006. This means there will be no more updates to get after June 30, 2006.
You can read here. Microsoft Extends Windows 98 Support Lifecycle . Thanks for the advise Geekgirl, Before i found this forum, i had trouble starting my computor so i went to a differant than usual computor tech, i waited for 24 hours to get the answer that my power supply was no good, and a new one had to be installed, i said what " i only got a new one 3 months ago ", when i got to the shop he showed me the old one with heaps of dust inside the power supply and told me that the other tech put a second hand one in, there is now way thats a new one, and said that will be $100 thanks, so silly me pays him, and so i fronted the other tech, he said crap, any body that works around computors knows that the fan sucks the dust in, so i told him to try the one that was suppose to be broken, he did, and it worked fine on 3 other computors, anyway i went back and abused the ones that said it was broken and got my $100 back, i am telling everybody this just in case it may happen to you, sounds like there is a lot of shifty going ons at some of these computor shops. all the best Tuby |

Thanks for sharing that Tuby......but all pc shops are not like that.
I for one own my own repair shop and I would never replace something that was not broken and then try to profit off of it. I sometimes feel I am too dang honest to be in the business For example, when I get a customers pc that is riddled with spyware, I charge a flat fee to remove viruses, spyware, and adware. I also leave the programs that I used to remove those on their computer and teach them how to use them to avoid reinfection. (Spybot, Adaware) Now that may sound kinda silly to you because you may think I never get them back as a returning customer but I do, but for other repairs, and I get thier friends. Because word of mouth is a great way to advertise. I feel it is necessary to educate my customers and I feel it shows them that I am an honest person, and that I am not out to rip them off.

If you can obtain work through word of mouth, its a very good way to go, in any type of business. The ones i mentioned in my post , were sneaky and idiots, because it finished up, all coming back onto them, now there the ones that " by my word of mouth " will cost them in the long run. For the sake of $100, trying to rip me, i would never tell anybody to get their machine fixed there, becuase of what of what they tried to do, and bad recomedations is very bad for business. I hope that no one thought that i was saying all computor shops are shifty, i only meant some are, as per post and i think it is very good of you that you take the time to help others here on this forum, and you do it for no profit at all, and especially doing it on top of you own job, it big hearted of you. If your shop was near were i live you would certainly be the one i would go to. all the best Tuby |
