slow booting fast computer.... why???

ok, system specs first...
athlon xp 2200
gigabyte mainboard
512 ddr400 kingston
128 g-force 2 agp
10/100/1000 network
20 gig hd
no modem

need anything else?

ok, so the problem is.... i built the computer, have had very little problem out of it. i have had windows 98se, windows xp, and some linux distros installed on it at different times.

recently i decided to switch from xp back to 98se. so i boot to dos, run fdisk, partition, format, instal win98. everythings going fine. it goes to reboot, hangs on the loading screen for.... get this..... 20 min. finaly boots, i start installing motherboard rescources and video card, yada yada, has to reboot. still takes 20 min.

now i know my computer is fast enough to boot win98 in under 5 min for sure. so what can the problem be? any ideas? i havent changed any hardware.... i did move halfway acros the country, but i have reset the ram, flashed the bios, and reinstalled windows, so whats up? what more info can i give to help with my plight? any ideas?

You Say You Have Had Several Different Operating Systems On This At One Time Or Another. I Would First Check Out Your Harddrive With Something Like Partition Magic. This Will Tell You What Partition/s You Have, And What If Any Problems There May Be With The Harddrive/ Partition. I Suspect The Problem Lies Here.

Good Luck

Ok. So Next I Suggest That You Disable All Other Hardware By Removing Both Ide And Power Leads Such As Cd/floppy And Any Additional Harddrives And Try Rebooting.

Next:
If You Have A Graphics Card Try Onboard Graphics If Available And Remove Card. If Not Try It In A Different Slot (pci). Same For Any Other Pci Device.

Remove Any Internet Connection.
Check Once Booted Up What Is Running In Run/ Type Msconfig,
Go To Startup Disable Everything. Including Virus Execpt For Systray (make A Note Of The Boxes With Ticks In Beforehand).
Reboot.

By Gradually Reinstalling Each Device And Or Startup Command You May Find What Is Holding It Up.

Have You Also Run Sfc From The Run Command Make Sure Windows Disk Is In Cd Before Starting This Will Replace Files Lost Or Damaged.

You Can Also Check Out Accessories/system Tools/ System Information And Then Tools /directx/ To See If There Is A Problem
Do Not Bother Letting It Check To See If Your Digital Signatures are Ok.?

Allow It To Load And Then Work Your Way Across The Folders Looking For Any Errors Reported At The Bottom Of The Screen.

Have You Checked Device Manager For Problems?

That Should Keep You Amused For A While.

Hope One Or A Combination Of These Solves Your Problem.
