Cannot view pictures and some files

I have that darn little windows flag showing for an icon on in my documents for my pictures and some files. I cannot view them. Have I lost something to open them with? What is corrupted?
THanks

Oops. Running Win98SE

What kind of files are they (gif, jpg, mpeg)?

If you don't have a program that can view them try to google for the file extension (gif, jpg, mpeg, etc.) and see if you can find a program that will run them.

Hope this is of some help to ya!

Well, I had them. Something just happened and don't know how to correct it.
It's mostly my jpg files. I can open them with paint aand view them though, but's that a pain to go through that everytime.
How do I retreive the most common file extensions and add them?
Thanks. Steve

In Explorer you specify which programs open files according to File Type (extension)

["I had them." Ooof. I don't like the sound of programs dissappearing.]
This response won't address _wny_ you are experiencing this problem but it may give you what you need to correct the symptom so you can open the files with the correct program.

Background you may know:
In Windows 98, open Windows Explorer and click Tools | Folder Options and then click the File Types tab. This list of "Registered file types", also known as the file type "associations", is how Windows knows what to do when you double-click a file. On my system, files with the DOC extension are registered as Wordpad Documents. In your system, the same files might be associated with MS-Word if you have it installed.
You may want to read "How to Create a File Association in Windows 98 and Windows Me", here... http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=306493

Questions to your original question:
What program did you previously use to view these files?
Do the files even have a file extension? To see what a files extension is, right-click its icon and choose Properties. If the file has no extension and you don't know what they are, you have some deeper investigation to do.
If the files have extensions, does Windows still have an association for that File Type in Windows Explorer? The extension is necessary for Windows to know which program to open your file with (see above article).

For files with known extensions:
(a) Add or correct the File Type entry in Windows Explorer as described in the above article. If you don't have an appropriate program for the file epos159 advice might help.
-OR-
(b) To test that a program can open your file, use this article: "How to Open a File Without Its Associated Program Starting Automatically", located here... http://support.microsoft.com/kb/258583/EN-US/

As mentioned at the outset, I don't aim to get to the cause of your problem, but I want you to be able to get around it at least.

THank you. I'll dig around in there, and also read those articles before I do anything.
ALso have a print problem. This is an old one. I cannot print anything on pages, say this post. All I get is square O's.
Now if I cut and paste and save to notepad, then I can print them ok.
