Upgrade Win 98 to XP

I have a HP 4445 computer with intel celeron, 4GB hard drive and 64MB memory. It's quite a few years old, though in very good condition. I tried to load Win XP on it and gosh, wasn't it slow . I had to revert to Win 98. I would like to upgrade my computer to be able to handle Win XP, but I don't want to go out and buy a whole lot of memory and hard drive only to find that it does not really help. So, what I want to know is, can I upgrade my computer so that it can handle XP superbly, and what would I need to buy to achieve this, or would it just be better to buy another computer, and what kind of a computer would be ideal? Please note that I do have Win XP and all I would need would be a computer without a monitor. Where would I get such a computer and what would you advice me to look for?

From MS ( Home is the same)

Here's What You Need to Use Windows XP Professional
• PC with 300 megahertz or higher processor clock speed recommended; 233 MHz minimum required (single or dual processor system);* Intel Pentium/Celeron family, or AMD K6/Athlon/Duron family, or compatible processor recommended

• 128 megabytes (MB) of RAM or higher recommended (64 MB minimum supported; may limit performance and some features)

• 1.5 gigabytes (GB) of available hard disk space*

• Super VGA (800 x 600) or higher-resolution video adapter and monitor

• CD-ROM or DVD drive

• Keyboard and Microsoft Mouse or compatible pointing device

Note min mem req but I think its time to put that one out to pasture. Depending on what you want it to do will determan what to get. The more speed and functionality the higher the price. A good place to start on lower end is the local repair shop as they usually will fix used computors and sell them. If its just a basic work horse then a Dell or Emachine can be purchased for around $400. If you plan on becoming ( or are ) a gamer you will need more. Look HERE and see if this helps.

Not a problem with a new PC, most start at 40GB HD and 256 MB RAM. An important tip. Stay within your budget, but dont quibble over an extra $100. The better of a machine you get now, the longer it will take to become obsolite. Case in point I am running a 4 yr old unit with a 1GH AMD athlon and 512 MB RAM, not the fastest thing but it still handles most programs.

Thumbs Up Upgrade Win 98 to XP

I read all your recommendations very carefully and I decided the best thing to do was leave my Win 98 as it is coz truth be told, I do like Win 98. I just hate feeling left behind technology-wise. So instead, I bought a refurbished Dell Dimension 400 computer as a second home computer, for $265 with 30GB hard drive, 256MB. It's also a P4, 1.7GHz with Win XP on it. I really wanted to go for the Pentium 4 more than anything. I hope it will not disappoint me.
