Best setting for virtual memory in WIN98
Hi,
Could anyone tell me what is the best setting for virtual memory using WIN98. I have Compaq Armada M700 laptop with 448MB Ram, 12GB Hard Disk, 700Mhz P3. Is it best to let windows manage the setting or to customise it? I read somewhere that a good setting for this is to have the minimum the same as the amount of RAM and the maximum 2.5 times that. I would be grateful for any advice other members can offer. Thanks Derek |

Its better to set it to a fixed value because otherwise windows is constantly resizing it and that takes sytems resources - and slows your OS down.
General rule of thumb is 1.5 to 2.0 times your RAM. So in your case somewheres between 700 to 900. Even if you set a lower and max size - windows will still resize it all the time -> performance loss. Stick with one setting (means min and max = same size. I'd go with 800Mb if i was you)

I don't believe that W98 will constantly change the size of a permanent swap file. In any case, for W98 with 448mb of memory, I'd set the swap file in the 256-384 range and leave it. You'll run out of system resources before memory in that machine anyway.
