Re: problem with edit command
there's two possibilities
1. the file's missing. you can restore it from the windows 98 CD (or installation folder). I couldn't tell you which cabinet the file is in though. In Windows, do a search for all files and type edit.exe. If it doesn't return any hits the file is missing. 2. it's not in your path. i don't recall where exactly edit.exe is at, but that location would need to be in the path variable in autoexec.bat. just rule out 1. first and i'll walk you through how to add it (and i'll also look up where it should be). |

Re: problem with edit command
Edit.com should be in C:\Windows\Command
It's in the Win98_28.cab for Win98, Win98_25.cab for Win98SE

Re: problem with edit command
I guess theoutcaste beat me to it. I was in the process of reinstalling Win98SE on a virtual machine.
It is indeed edit.com and not .exe (sorry). And the cab file for 98SE is indeed #25. And it is in c:\windows\command (or should be there) if you do find that it's in there, but you can't access it, try changing the path variable in autoexec.bat there should be a line starting with path=. change it to (or if it doesn't exist add it) PATH=C:\WINDOWS;C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM;C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND reboot to apply |

Re: problem with edit command
[quote=Jlp1928;2380465]Hi gudipalli,
In DOS type 'Edit /?' enter. If Edit exists on the drive you will get a help screen. Works for all DOS commands. Good Luck, Jim[/ it is working with c:>dos\edit.com anyway thanks Last edited by gudipalli; 10-15-2009 at 02:33 AM. |

Re: problem with edit command
Hi again,
Did you load the full DOS OS on the machine? Edit comes with 98 and is located in C:\Windows\Command along with several other useful DOS commands. That would be C:\Windows\Command\Edit. Thanks for the thanks and the feedback. Jim Last edited by Jlp1928; 10-15-2009 at 06:42 AM. Reason: Corrected command. |
