win 98 in virtual pc 2007 (***** card)
I am running Windows Virtual PC 2007 on Windows Vista Ultimate 64 bit.
I setup Windows 98SE as a guest OS. Because the graphics card that Virtual PC 2007 uses(the S3 trio 32/64 PCI) was originally a 4mb graphics card Windows 98 can only detect 4mb of graphics ram instead of the 8mb it is suppose to.(8mb can be changed to 16mb but that is off topic) Installing Virtual Machine Additions dose not change this. Is there a workaround(maybe a different driver) any help would be good. |

Re: win 98 in virtual pc 2007 (***** card)
Hi boodytynan
I don't see why the option to increase the memory to 16mb doesn't work -- the option wouldn't have been designed in if it wasn't usable (there should have been at least one logical software designer on the MS team). I'll assume you've already tried the following procedure: it so, heck, try it again -- and if you haven't tried it, give it a go. Since the entire graphics subsystem is virtualized, it should work. 1. Go to your My Documents folder 2. Find "My Virtual Machines" 3. Right-click the virtual machine file <Your VM name>.vmc and choose "Open With" 3b. Choose Notepad from the list (deselect "always open with this program") 4. Find (Ctrl-F) or Edit Find "vram" (without quotes) 5. Change 4 to 16 and save Best of luck . . . Gary

Re: win 98 in virtual pc 2007 (***** card)
I have tried that, I think the problem is with windows 98 only, I setup xp the same way and had no problems. It must of got overlooked and I don't think Microsoft will be relishing any more updates. Thanks anyway.

Re: win 98 in virtual pc 2007 (***** card)
You know, I wonder if VirtualPC behaves differently on 64bit hosts than on 32bit hosts. If I end up with extra time this weekend, I might test the memory increase in Win98se on a Win7 32bit tester PC that's currently finished with most of its tests. I'd test it on a 64bit machine too, but they're all busy with other projects.
I'll let you know if anything interesting results. . . . Gary
