Now THIS is weird.... can't figure this one out?
Hello all,
Okay, I took an old computer AMD233 with 128mgs of ram and just reloaded Win98Se on it. WHY YOU ASK.... I have elderly parents who have decided they want to learn about computers and try this "internet thing". I loaded 98 no probs... went to Microsoft and got all updates. I did this yesterday. Today I loaded Word 2000, PowerPoint. I also loaded Spyware Gaurd and Spyware blaster. NOW....... I went to Grisoft to download antivirus. I'm using a dial up connection.............. Just when the page is almost finished loading...BAM.... THE COMPUTER RESTARTS ITSELF????????? I talked to my daughter about this and she "that computer used to do that before"?????????????? ANY SUGGESTIONS ON THIS ONE? |

This seems to be a hardware problem, could be your power supply!
Does the board have AT or ATX power supply, sounds like a ATX! Other folks on this board are more knowlegable about this, but this is where I would start looking. If the board did it before you reinstalled the present OS, then I would look at a hardware problem.

truthfully, I would 1st go into the bios and set it back to defaults. Somehting might have got out of whack there. Something similar to this happened on my laptop, and after setting the bios back to defaults, it hummed along nicely.

Update to the madness
Okay here's an update to the madness.
I had the computer on ALL DAY yesterday and let my kids play the games like solitaire etc. As soon as I went online, I went to about 2 different sites. As soon as I went to Microsoft update.....BAM......IT RESTARTS. Funny thing is.......two days ago, I downloaded all the updates from Microsoft with no problems? I never downloaded Grisoft because I never got a chance to. The system had a 2 gig and 600 mg hard drives in it. I found a 4.3 gig harddrive and installed that one with a new cable.......... I took out the other two. I'll see what happens now........... |

I would check the power cord and and the reset switch connections. a momentary disconnect of power or a bad reset switch could be the reason for the restarts. Also check the wiring between the reset switch and the motherboard. Plug connectors are notorious points where failures can occur.
Good Luck! |
