PC has issues. Completed a HJT log review already.
Original Problem Write Up:
Symptoms: 1. For months, mouse recognition on boot - intermittent. 2. For months, PC hangs and requires forced shut down - intermittant. 3. Since recent install of Norton Antivirus 2005, auto starting of programs on boot seems slower. 4. Since recent install of Norton Antivirus 2005, Ccapp.exe goes [Not Responding] (and sometimes other running process too). If not noticed during browsing the web, it is always noticed on shut down. - frequently. 5. Since recent install of Norton Antivirus 2005, NAV hangs upon scan request. Perhaps on Ccapp.exe [Not Responding]. - always.... But scans fine in the safe mode. Actions: Ran: Ad-aware SE, MicroTrend Virus Scan, Hijack This Analyzer Log review, StartDreck, Clean Up,and TDS-3 trojan scan. Results: System all clean. Security advisor suspects the files list below may be misssing and advised I post a thread here to see if someone can verify the files are missing and advise on recovery. I ran a search of the hard drive for each file with the listed results. C:\WINDOWS\System\cmd.exe..............File Not Found C:\WINDOWS\System\netstat.exe..........c:\windows C:\WINDOWS\System\drwatson.exe........c:\windows C:\WINDOWS\System\drwtsn32.exe........File Not Found C:\WINDOWS\System\rundll32.exe..........c:\windows C:\WINDOWS\System\sysedit.exe...........File Not Found C:\WINDOWS\System\taskman.exe.........c:\windows C:\WINDOWS\System\taskmgr.exe..........File Not Found C:\WINDOWS\System\winlogon.exe.........File Not Found C:\WINDOWS\System\regedt32.exe.........File Not Found C:\WINDOWS\System\netmsg.dll.............File Not Found C:\WINDOWS\System\winsock.dll............File Not Found Thanks. Ardvark, I will ask someone to take a look at your question here. He should know what to do.

The only thing that springs to mind is to check those folders to see if those files are actually missing first.
A possible cure would be a repair installation. This is where you install Windows into the same location as the existing installation, and it should maintain your program settings but repair problems and missing files. It's not a cure-all, but it sometimes will fix this kind of issue. I hasten to add, I'm not really an ME user, I skipped from 98 to 2K/XP, and never actually had a system here running ME. I've encountered them with customers, but my experience is limited.

A repair install isn't a bad idea, but you may not have to resort to that yet. Run the System File Checker.
Put your Windows CD in the drive and then click Start->Run and type sfc /scannow then click OK. Follow the prompts and it may find the missing files and fix the issue. |
