MaxFileCache doesn't cure 1 GB ram problem

I installed two new 512 Mb PC2700 DDR's tonight and got the infamous "insufficient memory" message. After searching this forum, I found the fix of adding "MaxFileCache=512000" under the "vcache" heading in my system.ini file. However, this hasn't fixed my problem. I tried using lower numbers and I even tried adding "MaxPhysPage=40000" under the 386Enh heading in the system.ini file.

Does anybody have any other suggestions, besides less RAM and upgrade to XP? :) Any help is appreciated.

Since W9x runs out of system resources long before it'll run out of 512mb of memory, what's the point of more memory anyway?

FWIW, the only time I had a system with more than 512mb and I wanted to dual boot W98SE on it, the VCACHE settings worked fine. You might want to check the syntax, since any mistake will normally just get ignored.

Educate me on this. I have been using a video editing software and it runs fair with 512MB. I wanted it to run good, so I thought going to 1 GB would help. Is Win98 incapable of using the additional 512 MB? To utilize this new RAM, I HAVE to upgrade to Win2k or XP?

I think I'd seriously consider a move to XP. Once I went to 2000, I never looked back, my prime machine is now running XP, though I still have a couple machines with 2K on them.
