bring out your dead (harddrive)
I have a Lenovo hardrive that won't boot at all. I tried putting in an XP install disc and nothing happens. Is there a way to completely reformat the harddrive and start all over again? Is it easier to just replace it?
THanks. chrisusvi |

Re: bring out your dead (harddrive)
How old is the computer? Model? Laptop/Desktop? Specs (processor, memory, hard drive size)?
Are you trying to boot from the XP CD If so, enter the BIOS and set the boot order so CD boots first. To enter the BIOS, press the key at startup when it says "press key X to enter setup". if you succeed in booting from the CD, and you wish to remove everything from the hard drive (assuming there's nothing of importance on there), during setup, just delete all the existing partitions, then select the unpartitioned space and press enter (XP will automatically partition it and you can pick quick format) |

Re: bring out your dead (harddrive)
The problem is that I can't see anything. The monitor is blank and the lights on the keyboard don't even light up. I put in the WIndows XP CD and nothing happens.
Is there a way I can force the computer to boot off of the CD? THe computer is a Lenovo LKHLV98 with a 160GB HD (desktop). I don't know what the memory is or the processor speed. The computer is about 3 to 4 years old. The computer is in a public school and I just started a year ago. Last edited by chrisusvi; 09-04-2009 at 06:07 AM. |

Re: bring out your dead (harddrive)
I'm just another user here but I had a HD go out on me and that is what it did except I had lights on the keyboard. The HD made funny noises and I could hear the computer start up and then shut down when it detected the HD problem. Does your HD sound ok? Is it making any sound at all?
Test the monitor and keybord on a known working computer. Can you get an IT person to check the whole computer to diagnose it? |

Re: bring out your dead (harddrive)
What I did was replace the bad drive with a harddrive that works. When I started it up, nothing happened. The harddrive was humming and the cooling fans are blowing, but nothing else was happening. The monitor works as well as the keyboard. My eyes are on the motherboard now.
Any thoughts? |

Re: bring out your dead (harddrive)
If the computer is in a public school why isnt the IT Tech for the school handling this repair?
Most times replacing a working hard drive with an operating system already installed on it into another computer will bring bad results. Was there an OS installed on it? So replacing the hard drive results in working monitor, keyboard and fans now, where before you had nothing at all is this correct? Did you place you hand on the drive and felt the drive spinning?
