Question Disk Defragmenter stopped working after installing Norton Internet Security 2005

After installing Norton's Internet Security 2005 Online offered
by PeoplePC Online I soon discovered that the Maintenance Wizard
will no longer COMPLETE! AFTER SCANDISK COMPLETES & Disk Defragmenter
is supposed to Start, is as far as the process gets in Normal Mode!
After the Disk Defragmenting Display window appears, no matter how
long you wait NO DEFRAGMENTING ACTIVITY EVER APPEARS IN THE
DISPLAY WINDOW!
I did NOTE HOWEVER, THAT IF YOU RESTART IN SAFEMODE,
Maintenance Wizard DOES COMPLETE, HOWEVER, AFTER
RESTARTING IN NORMAL MODE NORTON INTERNET SECURITY 2005
CEASES TO FUNCTION REQUIRING A REMOVAL & RE-INSTALLATION
IN ORDER TO GET THE PROGRAM FUNCTIONING AGAIN! CAN ANYTHING
BE DONE TO CORRECT THIS ISSUE? I HAVE SEVERAL 98 Machines
all of which are exhibiting the same issue! Thank You!

Welcome to TSF

It was always good practice to run Disk Defragmenter in Safe Mode in a Windows 98 environment.

1. Go to Start > Run and type msconfig in the Open: box

3. Hit apply and OK and restart Windows
4. This starts Windows with only the basics running; Insures nothing will interfere with ScanDisk and Defrag
5. Run ScanDisk and Defrag, when ready go into msconfig and select Normal startup and restart Windows

(If you use Windows 95, restart your system, when you see the Starting Windows 95... text on your screen, quickly press the F8 key. From the menu that follows, choose Safe mode, and run ScanDisk & Defrag. When ready, reboot.)

Norton is probably the reason it is not running properly in the first place, uninstall Norton and then try running it. This will help us determine if this is system corruption or software conflicting.
If ti runs ok, try using NOD32 from ESET.com, use the earlier version which I believe is 2.7, you will like it so much better.
