Xp installation on 98 Help!!
I am currently trying to install XP on a older Gateway Win98 computer. The computer is completely compatible with XP. I wanted do a clean install by deleting the existing partition and creating a new one. So, I set the BIOS to boot from cd first and then booted from a Windows XP Pro setup disk. Everything went according to plan until I reached the blue screen showing my partitions. One was Gateway Fat32 partition with plenty of space. The other was unpartitioned space with 16mB of space. I followed the instructions for a clean install presented on Microsoft.com and many other websites. It said to delete the partition. I selected delete on the partition with win98 on it and an error came up saying that temporary setup files were on the partition and it could not be deleted. The only option was to press enter and go back to the previous screen. Please Help!

Re: Xp installation on 98 Help!!
i would just try it again and make sure you delete any and all partitions.
also, you should convert the disk to ntfs during partitioning and then let it format

Re: Xp installation on 98 Help!!
I have tried it multiple times. Could it have anything to do with the installation disc? On other websites people have suggested using fdisk.exe to delete the partition, but I couldn't figure out how to do that.

Re: Xp installation on 98 Help!!
If you get a message that " temporary setup files were on the partition " you have not booted from the installation cd . . Did you see a prompt to "Press any key to boot from CD"?
This is a good guide to reinstalling XP . . you might want to print it for reference during the install. http://www.techhandbook.com/windows/...g-Windows.html

Re: Xp installation on 98 Help!!
Also wouldnt hurt to get a hard drive utility to wipe the hard drive clean first here:
http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=287 Choose an cd ISO image, and burn it as an image: http://www.imgburn.com/ Tip: Using the harddrive utility - delete the partitions and make it 1 partition, then install xp and make it an NTFS file system. Proper installation of windows: Clean harddrive using a HD utility if necessary Set boot order to boot from cd first Install windows Install any necessary drivers - check device manager for any yellow ! makrs Install antivirus and antispyware Update windows
