Re: installing windows 98
Been a while since I've played with Virtual PC but you need to setup the CD drive before you can use it (tell it which physical drive to use). Use the help files with VPC and search for the answer - I know it is there.

Re: installing windows 98
Are you booting from the Win98 Startup floppy, or the Win98 CD? Using the physical disk or an image?

Re: installing windows 98
Did you create the image file yourself? VPC doesn't come with a ready to go Win98 image - you have to supply that.

If you are booting from the floppy, if you can post the autoexec.bat and config.sys files we might be able to spot the problem. If booting from a Win98 CD image (iso or img) I'd suspect the image wasn't created properly, might just have to create a new iso from the disk.

Actually error reading your windows 98 cd If you are not using Windows Second Edition then it may the problem but if you try to reinstall with the clean bootable disk then it may work try ones.

Re: installing windows 98
If the boot image used to create the ISO does not include the proper CD-ROM driver, you could get the CDR101 error.
You should first get the option to boot from Hard Disk or boot from CD-ROM Then you should get the option to Start Win98 Setup from CD, or start the PC with or without CD-ROM support. (Screenshot #1) If you select #1, it will then try to load several basic CD-ROM Drivers until it finds one that works, ending with loading MSCDEX (Screenshot #2) and then presenting the blue Microsoft Windows 98 Setup screen. It should actually use the first driver, as that's the only one that will show the number of devices line. If you don't see it trying to load these drivers then the image was not created correctly. Always possible that there was some glitch when VPC 2007 was installed, doesn't take long to uninstall/re-install to rule that out.

Re: installing windows 98
Might be easier to get a Win98SE boot floppy, then start setup after booting with the floppy image.
You can download one from www.bootdisk.com. Scroll down to the section titled Non-Windows Based Image Files W/ImageApp

Re: installing windows 98
The Virtual PC has a floppy drive though, and can use an image file stored on your hard drive.
Seems I grabbed the wrong link, it should have been http://www.bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm Scroll down to the section titled Non-Windows Based Image Files W/ImageApp Download the Win98SE file (win98sc.zip) Extract the win98sec.img file to your hard drive someplace. This is the floppy disk image you will capture. Start the WIn98 Virtual Machine, then immediately click Floppy | Capture Floppy Disk Image... and browse to the image file you extracted. When VPC boots to this floppy image, the CD-ROM drive will be Drive R: Load the Win98 CD Image from the CD menu, the start Win98 setup by typing R:\setup.exe The screenshot shows the files contained on the floppy image.

Re: installing windows 98
So after booting with the floppy, type R:\Setup.exe, and you get this error:
CDR101: device not ready drive R. Do you get the same if you type DIR R:? If so, I'd say you have a bad image, or your VPC install is corrupted. Can you boot the VM using your Vista disk? If not, I'd uninstall/re-install VPC 2007
