Re: internet not working

Hi again Comet2000

Can i assume that this is the same PC which was having trouble with MSN some weeks ago? If yes: certainly try another round of malware scans as part of your troubleshooting.

The advice in this reply is for both this thread & your related thread (bearing the same posting date as this one) regarding ZoneAlarm.

I previously advised you to consult your Internet provider, to make sure that your hardware/software is supported, and that your settings match their recommended values. This can save you a lot of time, as they are often aware of quick solutions for common errors that occur with their service.

If you have a broadband connection (cable/DSL/or satellite) -- having the Internet stop after 5 minutes repeatedly could be a problem with your hardware setup. You may have inadvertently entered an incorrect value that is causing your "lease" to expire after 5 minutes (the "lease" is for the IP [Internet address] that your PC gets from your Internet provider). The faulty setting would most likely reside in your broadband device/router.

The ZoneAlarm error concerns Root Certificates, and generally traces back to malware infection. The easiest repair (once the system has been cleaned of malware) is usually to uninstall & then reinstall ZoneAlarm. For some systems, a roll-back of IE & then reinstallation of IE is necessary. One or both of these solutions usually work -- let us know if you have any further trouble. Please try to scan for malware as thoroughly as possible as a first step.

If the PC having the trouble is over eight years old (true of most Win9x/Me systems), you may also want to run some diagnostics to make sure hardware issues aren't lying underneath the software trouble. You'd test the memory & hard drive, and check that the CMOS battery hasn't lost it's charge (the system date/time would constantly revert backwards if so). A "UBCD" is handy for testing the memory & hard drive --- http://www.ultimatebootcd.com

Best of luck
. . . Gary
