General Protection Fault
I am using Win 98 second ed in a computer to run software to operate an old hard drive base videotape machine but for some reason I keep getting a General Protection Fault when I open the software. The computer is a Gateway 2000 PII 266mhz 128m ram. I have checked the win.ini, autoexec.bat, config.sys, start up and registry to see if it is being caused by a program at start up but the only thing in the registry besides systray & windows is scan disk. I have read that GPF's are sometimes caused by programs trying to use the same DLL or memory but how do I check this?

Hello and Welcome to TSF,
Run checkdisk: Start run type cmd in command prompt type chkdsk /r Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another process. Would you like to schedule this volume to be checked the next time the system restarts? (Y/N) type: Y (press enter) reboot pc so it will run now Did this fix the problem? if it did not, then simply uninstall the program through add/remove in control panel reboot pc reinstall the program reboot pc Does it work now?

For Win98 that should be:
Start | Run, type scandisk, press enter Check the Automatically fix errors box Click Start You may want to test the RAM as well Memtest86+ Memtest86 (Site seems to be having problems) Memtest86 can also be found here, but that may link back to the memtest86 site. HTH Jerry
