Re: win ME upgrade to win xp
You still need a full install cd operating system disc even if its a previous installation cd
or oem cd installation disc. An upgrade cd operating system disc is good only if you have a previous window (installed) on harddrive. Note: go back to the first post, "it says the harddrive was formatted".

Re: win ME upgrade to win xp
Risky, the upgrade CD works even with a blank hard drive (one that has been dban'ed or killdisk'ed, or brand new out of the box). During text setup, you'll get the screen I posted if it can't find a previous version of Windows installed on the hard drive. I think it's über-handy because it's better than having previous stuff (95/98/Me/NT/2000) and installing over it. Also it can save you a few bucks because an upgrade CD is cheaper than a full version and you can get a (genuine) Windows 95 or 98 CD for like 10 bucks on ebay these days.

Re: win ME upgrade to win xp
Then its not a upgrade cd disc, its a full install cd then.
Upgrade needs a foundation to work off of.

Re: win ME upgrade to win xp
having read everything i am completely baffled as to the problem
If i understand correctly you are trying to get Windows XP on the machine having had it messed up by the format command? Just put the windows xp cd in and let it install. when it gets to asking about the partitions just delete everything on the disk delete all partitions and create a new one and let it install. Make sure you go into the BIOS (press and hold Del or F2 when the PC first starts) and check that Boot from CD is first If you are trying to get Windows ME back on to the computer then use the windows XP cd as i described above, when it gets to the stage were you can change the partitions delete them all but this time create FAT32 patitions. goto www.bootdisk.com and download the bootdisk image for windows ME, install this to a floppy disk. boot the pc with the floppy disk and use the windows ME cd to install windows ME. (you will have to get a copy of Windows ME from somewhere....How you get a copy of the software is up to you.
