ahh! I just want to uninistall win 98

I'm trying to fix my little sisters computer.
And well, all i want to do is uninstall it, then reinstall.
But EVERYTHING in the computer brings up an Open With window, and it's mostly .ink files...
I can't even restart in msdos, because it brings up an open with windown for "exit.exe" .
So how do I uninstall?
the uninstall short cut under windows folder is just the same open with window..
It's driving me nutz!
Please help!
(yes i ran a registry thing, and that's when this all happend)

Re: ahh! I just want to uninistall win 98

If your trying to format, and reinstall win98 you need a win98 bootdisk.
If her machine is still working you can create a boot floppy by going to
add/remove programs, there will be a tab to select and follow the
prompts, if my memory is correct, its been awhile. Or you may try
going to www.bootdisk.com they used to provide the info needed to create
a boot cd.
You will have to set bios to boot from floppy first, then hdd. Once in
you will have to type in c:\format, then away you go. If you make it
that far and are confused post back here..You know that microsoft
doesnt give support for 98 anymore..

Re: ahh! I just want to uninistall win 98

Hi Kimi,

Manic is right but I would first try a 98 reinstall without the format. Just tell it to install to C:\Windows. If it works you will still have all your files and programs that you have loaded. You will not have all your drivers. Usually Sound and Video will have to be downloaded and installed and probably others. If your 98 is still running or you have Buddy with one you can make the startup disk from Control Panel, Add/Remove Progs, Startup Disk. It will get you to DOS with your CD working and has several helpful programs.

Good Luck, Jim

Re: ahh! I just want to uninistall win 98

Hi again Kimi,

OOPS! I left out part of the third sentence. I meant to say "If you format the drive you will not have all of your Drivers (or any of your progs and files). Sorry about that!

Re: ahh! I just want to uninistall win 98

Start the system, then tap F8 (or hold down the CTRL key) until the startup menu appears.
Choose Command Prompt Only
At the C: prompt, type scanreg /restore
Pick a date from before you ran the cleaner that shows started.

If you can't get to the Command Prompt, boot with a boot disk.
at the A: prompt, type C:\Windows\Command\scanreg /restore

HTH

Re: ahh! I just want to uninistall win 98

Thank you everyone :-)

When I go to c:/Windows
they all ask me to open with...
When I start the computer up it instantly comes up with a screen with an ATI thing, then tells me to push f6 to open setup screen (with the screen informing me what all hardware is installed in the computer) then it also adds press enter to start windows...

Re: ahh! I just want to uninistall win 98

Is it giving any kind of error message? Usually if there is an error during post, you'll get a error message, then the message to enter the Setup or boot to Windows

Start tapping F8 as soon as you press enter, or hold down the CTRL key, see if that will get you to the Win98 startup menu.
