can't update reinstalled op system
Hi,
I recently had my hard drive scrubbed to get rid of a virus.then had my operating system=(windowsme)reinstalled.now because me is so old, microsoft doesn't support it anymore.the problem is I'm facing a catch 22,my windows explorer wont work because I don't have the updates,or patches that came in updates while me was current.I know the updates are still out there.but explorer just causes the sreeen to fuzz out(it goes to grey lines)when I try to open a page.have left computer online, and set windows to automatic update, but does nothing even on overnight.I now log on using firefox browser.but when I go to windows update, its says you have to run internet explorer to download windows.can anyone help??tell me how to get updates?followed microsoft support to set js script and ad tags but one msscript.oxc. failed.still can't get updates. |

Re: can't update reinstalled op system
That's why the ie6 download did not install . . you already have it. Have you installed your drivers? . . Chipset first, then video and the others?

Re: can't update reinstalled op system
try one thing, turn off your browsers, click on start button on the bottom left, either there or with in the all programs, there should be something that says windows update or something like that, click on it and see if you can update that way

Re: can't update reinstalled op system
Hi all
If too many things continue to go wrong with the system, even after all of your latest efforts, I think you'll want to consider erasing the hard drive again & trying your restore disk again. Do this with only the monitor, keyboard, and mouse attached (no networking devices attached, no speakers, no cameras, no PDAs, no external USB/eSata/Firewire hard drives or flash drives, no printers, scanners, or multifunctions). Also, erase the hard drive with a thorough drive cleaner such as DBAN ("Darik's Boot and Nuke") or the utility from the hard drive manufacturer to "zero write". After your 2nd try at restoring Windows, leave the system disconnected from peripherals & networks -- and test the installation. If the hardware hasn't changed, most of the drivers should already be present, as they should have been included on the restore disks from the manufacturer. If the system hardware hasn't changed, and yet Windows doesn't operate correctly, you might want to start testing for hardware failure. Links: DBAN for CD/DVD --- http://download.cnet.com/Darik-s-Boo...html?tag=mncol DBAN for floppy diskette --- http://download.cnet.com/Darik-s-Boo...html?tag=mncol Memory diagnostics --- http://www.memtest.org Hard Drive diagnostics --- http://tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=287 Re: video ... I'm guessing that the 'millium gs' that you refer to is a Matrox Millenium video card --- those drivers should have been present on the restore disk. Is the video not working immediately after the restore? Should Windows restore OK - don't connect to the Internet until you have an antivirus and firewall in place. Some of your current troubles with your reinstall could be the result of reinfection. Best of luck . . . Gary
