Re: win 98 cdrom install
Hi bil_drk
Is the Mitsumi 24x Cd-Rom drive that you mention about seven or eight years old? If so, it might be nearing the latter part of it's expected useful time-before-failure. If it's still in good working condition, it shouldn't need any drivers added to work in a Windows 98/98se system. It just needs to be installed correctly: using anti-static precautions, with the correct jumpers set, and the correct cable used to connect to the right port. If it needs to share an IDE cable with another device, you can try setting the CD-ROM to Slave and the other device to Master (using the jumpers on the drives). Best of luck . . . Gary

Re: win 98 cdrom install
Hi again
The support for IDE CD-ROM drives is built into Windows itself. There is no need to provide Windows with any drivers for the CD-ROM. For the CD-drive to be installed correctly, this should have been the procedure: 1) Shutdown Windows & let the PC power off. 2) Unplug the power cord. 3) Ground yourself by touching a grounded piece of metal, or by wearing a wrist-strap, and open the case. 4) Place the CD drive in a drive bay & attach the mounting screws. 5) Set the jumper to "Master" if it will be the only drive on its IDE cable. 6) Set the jumper to "Slave" if it will share the IDE cable with another drive. ....also set the other drive's jumpers to "Master". 7) Connect the IDE cable. 8) Connect the 4-pin molex power cable to the CD-drive. 9) Close the PC case & replug the power cord. 10) Boot the PC, but immediately press the function key mentioned in the banner or splash screen at power-on, such as "Press F1 (or F2, F10, Del, etc. ) to Enter Setup". 11) In your Bios Setup screens, see if the new drive is recognized. If not, see if the IDE port to which the CD drive is attached is set to AUTO. If not, set it to AUTO, and exit Setup, choosing "Save Changes & Exit". 12) If all is well, the drive should be detected as Windows starts. 13) If the drive is not detected by Windows, it may have failed. Or the IDE cable used might be bad. You can try another IDE cable. Best of luck . . . Gary

Re: win 98 cdrom install
Hi Bil,
If your hard drive is plugged into the primary port and the secondary port is unused then best idea is to use the secondary for the CD. You do not have to load any drivers. Cd would be plugged MS (Master) or CS (Cable Select) depending on what type of IDE cable you have. Windows will pick it up on reboot for reading. If you had a Burner CD then you would also have to load Burner Software. Good Luck, Jim |
