Hard drive starts, but black screen. Pls help!
My Thinkpad (Win 98) won't boot. I think I disabled the wrong hard drive in Device Manager in trying to resolve an IRQ conflict. At first on start-up I could start with the recovery disc but only to the floopy A drive, and when I tried to load Win, I got a message there was no hard drive. IN the process of trying this and that I now can't even get it to recognise the recovery disc.
On start, the hard drive spins normally for a couple of seconds and then slowws and I get one long beep and one short beep, then nothing. Any suggestions would be appreciated. |

Welcome to TSF.
The beep code you gave me sounds like a motherboard issue. Did you change anything in the bios? See if you can change the IRQ setting in the bios.

Thanks for the response. No I didn't get into the bios. And what I thought was the hard drive spinning was in fact the fan. I don't believe the drive is operating. I'm sort of coming to the conclusion it's shot.
In other searches, I've come to read about the "click of death". I think I have had those symptoms in recent weeks, so maybe the drive has just simply given up the ghost! |
