System File Checker
Hello,
I'm having trouble accessing web pages that open through a link that opens a new window--the new window opens but nothing's in it. Elsewhere on this forum, it was suggested that I run system file checker and that it should be simple to use. Well, I just can't figure it out. I was told to run full scan and it will tell me what it finds. When I scan for altered files it brings back one file at a time with the message 'system file checker has identified the following file has changed,' it sometimes says the file has been deleted. My options for responing are 1) Do I want to update verification information, 2) restore file, 3) ignore, or 4) update verification files for all changed files. I don't know what to to because I don't know what those files are or what they do. Do I hit ignore over and over. I'm using Windows 98. Thank you, Jennifer Last edited by jenden; 01-18-2005 at 11:11 AM. |

if you hit ignore there is no point to running the system file checker
if a file has been deleted you probably need to reinstall it some files are changed by windows updates and it is almost impossible to tell you which ones i would choose restore for all of them and then d/l and run the unofficial sp,you will find a number of places to d/l it from here http://www.google.com/search?q=win+9...utf-8&oe=utf-8 |

Thanks for your reply and advice. I'm still afraid of doing anything in system file checker. One of the files it asked me about that had been deleted was XupiterWAUninstaller.exe. I don't remember what that is, but I pretty sure Xupiter is bad. It installed itself on my comper. So, anyway I'm afraid to restore that.

that is spyware here is a list that you can print off and refer to
http://www.spywareguide.com/filelist.html if the file has been cleaned from the computer it should be unable to restore it the only files it should be able to repair are the ones it can take from your win cd run a check for virus and spyware first |
