Mouse/Keyboard freeze up

Running Windows 98SE with a Pentium (1), 32MB of RAM. It sucks, I know, but it's all I have, and it's never done stuff like this before.

This started to happen about 10 or so months ago. The keyboard and the mouse just suddenly stop working without warning. Everything else such as web pages loading, animations and music continue to play, but the mouse and keyboard are DEAD. The mouse is a Microsoft Intelimouse (PS/2), and the keyboard is an IBM keyboard (model KB-8923). However, there's some catches.

1. It only seems to be triggered by moving the mouse. If I stick to using the keyboard, it won't freeze. Just because I move the mouse around doesn't mean it'll freeze, but it's like playing Russian Roulette.
2. On some occasions, I'd say once every 100 freezes or so, only the mouse will lock up. I'm free to use the keyboard and get around with ALT, TAB and the cursor keys. Yet the mouse is still dead.
3. Sometimes the mouse will freeze up and unfreeze periodically for a few seconds before locking up completely (taking the keyboard with it)
4. This is not a result of lack of memory or a good processor, it can happen any time as long as I'm moving the mouse. It can freeze in literally less than a second from when Windows finishes loading, or after seven hours of non-stop use. It all seems to be random.
5. Not related, but my CD-ROM drive is jammed, so I can't fix the drivers via CD. I tried getting something in that little hole to open it manually, but to no avail.

My System

Welcome to TSF.

Try using another mouse and see if it causes the freezing witht that one also.

For the cdrom drive, it should be able to eject if you stick a bold point pen into the manual eject hole. Try hitting the eject button also. Is there a CD in there?
