98-SE Defrag issues

No matter what I do, I cannot defragment my hard drive. Even when I start in safe mode, it says that something has interrupted the hard drive and defrag will restart, then I just hear my hard drive working continuously but after leaving it running for 12 hours it still never did anything. I tried running scandisk in DOS then disabling the scan part of defrag, and it still wouldn't make it past 0%. Help!

I myself don't recommecd using the Default defrag program from windows.

its better to use something 3rd party. any will work i recommend this.

http://www.execsoft.com/coverpage.asp

also make sure everything in the background is closed.
i.e your taskbar is full of stuff you can either "close, disable"

try running Diskkeeper in safe mode. since only the necessary software that needs to be up will make it easier to defrag.

I have heard of some system infections causing the defrag to stop in this same manner. If you haven't done so already, run a Virus scan. If you don't have a virus protection program with recent updates then try this site here for a free scan. It may eliminate some hazards preventing defragmention.

Post back here to let us know if your issue is resolved or if further assistance may be required.

Obtain defrag.exe from the WinMe OS and rename your present one to DefragOLD.exe and copy the file from WinMe.

Get the file here....

Confused

Well, the WinME defrag did the exact same thing the 98 one did, nothing. And since installing Diskeeper, the only way I can start Windows is thru Safe Mode. I don't think it installed right. (It was asking for a TCP/IP connection which the computer in question does not have- it's not even connected to the internet (which is how I'm pretty sure a virus is not the issue.))
I'm thinking I may just have to break down and buy a program to try and clean it up. Either that or hire an exorcist.

Win 98SE defrag issue

I had the same problem. The solution was to go into the Task Mgr. and close all running programs EXCEPT SYS TRAY and EXPLORER!!! The regular windows defrag should work then by going thru the START/PROGRAMS/
ACCESSORIES/SYSTEM TOOLS/DISK DEFRAG

My System

It may be obvious but make sure your screen saver is off

I've tried stopping all non-vital programs. It didn't help. And I never use screensavers.
I tried a third-party defragger as part of a trial of System Mechanic and it said "Hard Drive Locked" while trying to move data. I eventually did get my defragger to work by booting from a different drive, but that led to another problem (see my other post )
