restoring deleted rundll32.exe (98se)
Hi folks..einstein here managed to delete rundll32.exe (don't ask!) and now I've lost higher functions (ie. add/remove programs etc.) which are met with a 'can't find rundll32.exe' error message. Of course I can't locate my Win98 cd but I was able to download rundll and paste it to my Windows folder with no improvement. I've been told the only solution is to backup data and reinstall Windows which seems neandertholic to me..there must be a better way..anyone know how to best deal with this?

Hi, and welcome to TSF. Clicl start, run, type "sfc" on the command line. System file checker will open, you can use it to re-install the .dll , when sfc asks for the media, you'll need to direct it to the location where you have the .dll saved. I believe you may have the option to direct it to a URL on the internet as well for the needed files. As sfc will probably find more to restore/update. Hope this works for you.

that was a step..
Thanks 'B'..that advice seemed to work but now when I try to open 'add/remove programs' I get messaged 'missing export KERNELCLINK..make that KERNEL32.dll-ActivateActCtx' or something close to that ..what next?

Sounds like you still have more restoring to do with sfc. BTW, since sfc only restores the system rather than re-installing, it doesn't ask for a system key, and should restore from any 98 cd, the newer the better. As possibly a last resort, because of the time involved, you should be able to download the driver files you need from the M$ website, I suspect the whole fileset is available, but I could be mistaken.
Take advantage of the options for detecting altered files and such, there are very few issues you can't fix with sfc.
