I have seen this more than once in Win98. It just does not detect a Serial Mouse. I reseached the problem and tried many things to resolve it, but still no luck!
BIOS settings ok, I even installed an Serial Adapter Card... which worked, but now stopped. FYI, I am helping a friend that still uses an AT motherboard on her OLD system. I thought of buying a PS/2 Adapter Card, which I probably will! But for knowledge sake, because I've seen it before with Win98. I like to know what you have done to resolve this issue.I've all ready tried unistalling and reinstalling all ports, even editing the registry after uninstalling the ports, but still get that error message: "Windows did not detect a mouse attached to the Computer. You can safely attach a serial mouse now. To attach a mouse to a PS/2 mouse port, you must first turn the Computer off." I hope someone has solved this issue, because I'm getting a little frustrated. Thanks

It could be that the port itself is damaged. That would probably cause it not to recognize the mouse.

i've seen the serial mouse stop working many times, usually it is the port.
my linux machine has no mouse support because of it, so now i use a 20$ USB optical mouse from radio shack. you might decide a USB mouse is the easiest way to solve it, but it is an old machine if it doesn't have a ps/2 mouse port, so you might not want to bother saving it.
