Blank Screen at start up
I took a working computer with Win 98 home from a friends office. I released IP Config and I deleted the Cable Modem. Other that this I can't think of anything I did. When I deleted the Modem it had me restart. When the Windows 98 screen came up the computer would lock up. Hard Boot and it started in Safe Mode. I tried a couple things but nothing worked. The next few time I tried starting the computer it got past the Win 98 screen and seemed to be working but nothing evidently loaded as I ended up with a completely blank desktop. After a few tries I finally got it to start in Safe Mode and this is where it is now.
Any ideals? Thanks |

hmm in safe mode go into add and remove programs and look for any programs that might have been associated with the cable modem or account. also go into device manager and see if there are any devices with a problem. then run scandisk and defrag and try to reboot. hmm if you can run them in safe mode. if not try to reboot and if you still have errors run scandisk from dos prompt.

FYI, Scandisk and defrag will run in Safe Mode, infact it is better too run defrag in Safe Mode, because all most all resources are not running.
titleman, if you can boot into MSDOS, (Command Prompt), try using this utility: scanreg /restore then select a different date that you may know was working good. To get to the Command Prompt, it's the same way to get to Safe Mode: F8. Good Luck! titleman, I'm not sure if you can get or have a Win98 CD, because running setup a lot of times fixes most problem issues. If you get a chance the next time you boot into Safe Mode, look in the Root Directory, or C:\ and see if by chance there is a folder named Win98. If so, boot back into the Command Prompt, work your way to that folder and start the setup. If you don't know your way around DOS follow this: at the C:\ type in "cd win98" with out the quotes. Once there you'll see this: C:\WIN98 at this point just type: "setup" with out the quotes and your off. Remember this is only if there is a folder in your Root Directory called Win98! Good Luck!
