Unstable System

My system has been unstable for awhile. It crashed again Wednesday night. I did both a restore and a system recovery, but neither fixed the problems, i.e.,

1. I get a message Back Web files .dll cannot be found.

2. Start-up cannot find the operating system. I have to manually select Win98 every time.

3. Install Wizard can't sense the USB printer cable to reinstall the printer.

There are other small errors that persist but don't seem to affect the computer's performance (they predate the present difficulties).

Would the problems go away if I updated to Windows XP? If not, what do you suggest? I've used my Norton Utilities, spyware, everything else I can think of.

My System

If this system is very unstable now, I would suggest backing up everything and do a clean install (assuming you have the Windows cd that can do the clean install and not just a recovery). You will have better performance in the long run.

But before you do that, did you run a memory test to make sure that the ram/memory is ok? Run the Windows Memory Diagnostic test (see instructions on site) to check for any possible memory errors.

Since my last post earlier today the system has deteriorated further. The "restore" feature no longer works, and I can't get on the Internet now (I'm writing this from the library).

Since my printer won't install I have hand written the screen I get (that I didn't get before) when booting the system:

CPU - Intel (R) Celeron (TM) processor 600 MHz
640K System RAM Passed
382M Extended RAM Passed
0128K Cache SRAM Passed
System BIOS shadowed
Video BIOS shadowed
UMP upper limit segment address: E8A4
Mouse Initialized
FIXED DISK 0: WDC WD205AA
ATAPI CD-ROM: SAMSUM CD-ROM SC-148
ERROR
0251: System CMOS checksum bad--default configuration used
(F1) Setup (F2) Resume

This is the screen I struggled with until I figured a way to get through it and bring up the windows screen.

It does have something to do with the memory. At one point it was running on 26 percent resources. Very puzzling.

However, I do have the Full Recovery CD and haven't tried it yet. I'll see if I can find someone to help me figure out how to do that without losing all my files and information.

Thanks for your help. I'll let you know if this works.

I did a full recovery of the system--am now in the early stages of reloading software.

The problem described above still exists when I turn the sysem on.

In addition, I got this message: "A required .DLL file was not found. CDUDFLIB.DLL"

It's too early to know if the third problem will recur. That is, at unexpected, unpredictable times the CPU goes up to 99-100 percent, accompanied by a profound slowdown of the system. Nothing to do but turn it off and on again and hope it improves. Sometimes I have to turn it on several times before it acts normal. (Again, I don't know if this will be a problem or not.)

You get download a copy of that missing DLL file here:

http://www.dll-files.com/dllindex/dl...shtml?cdudflib

Extract it to your C:\Windows\System32 folder.

Thumbs Up

Thank you so much. I turned off the computer for 24 hours. When I turned it back on, one of the problems has disappeared, i.e., the one described at length above. The one problem needing to be solved is downloading the mentioned dll file. THANKS!

If you haven't done so, check into replacing the CMOS battery if it is an older system. I've seen week batteries cause the CMOS checksum error.
