AOL say no broadband for win98 first ed

Hi, I was thinking of upgrading my AOL to broadband but they tell me it can't be done with Windows 98 first edition, but it can with Windows 98 SE, I suspect this might be garbage from them and it is just because of the built-in Internet Explorer browser which they don't want you to have. Naturally I never use the AOL browser which ****. Does anyone know if broadband will work or could be made to work with Windows 98. Before you give me a hard time about using AOL I detested their browser but they don't limit downloads and are quite good value. I can't really be bothered to upgrade operating system as I have hundreds of programmes that I have accumulated over years and I would need to do a install from scratch. Cheers Jimmy.
