OS: win98


Computer will not boot up - Compaq Evo N10c

My computer was shut down incorrectly and now will not reboot. The Compaq screen comes up and then I get one of 2 messages:

Fixed Disk Parameter Table or BIOS Error - system halted
or Non System Disk or Disk Erro Replace and stike any key when ready.

Any help/advise for a complete novice. The computer does contain important data and programs imperative for my work.

Welcome to TSF

Sounds like maybe the hard drive has failed. .Here are a few things to try

1. Boot to a 98 boot disk, at the command prompt type in scanreg /restore
You'll be given a choice of dates. Select one and click Restore.

2. Find the manufacturer of your hard drive and run their Hard Drive Diagnostics Utility.

3. Remove the CMOS battery and disconnect the psu from the motherboard, wait 5 minutes and replace. Try booting agian, you will probably have to go into the BIOS/Setup and reset the date& time. At this point when you are in there, try re-detecting the Hard drive
