Hey guys.. wondering if anyone can help me ... bit of a long story but i'll try and keep it short.
Had problems with internet.. all of a sudden started getting security alert messages saying that i have not chosen to trust this site's certificates (of which i have been using for ages)! also couldn't sign into my msn messenger.. so did some googling for the problem and found some ideas.. tried them... nothing.. then someone said to try going to Start - Shutdown - Restart in ms-dos mode so that i could do a c:scanreg /fix... so i shut it down to restart in dos mode (this is win 98) and when it restarted it says windows98 is now starting your ms-dos based program... plug and play for MS-DOS(R).. blah..blah TradeMark of Microsoft Corp... THEN thats it.. continues no further, and cant type anything.. just have a black screen with above text at the top :(.. NOW i can get in in safe mode... can't under command prompt and can't under normal mode.. Really am stuck here peolpe.. any advice would be great.. or is it a case of start a fresh and come to terms with losing all .. :( Thanks in advance for your help :) Jay P.s pc has been making some strange noises of resent.. was going to have a quick look to see what it was, but haven't got round to it.. could this be the problem? |

Unfreeze The Freeze
jay unless you dig msdos id stay clear.
hopefully you have a startup disk for your windows 98 P.C. If so pop that in and boot up your unit.that should get you going. If not then (if i can remember) hold down your ctrl key at startup and that should enable you to choose the startup options to load windows. If its not ctrl then its shift key (arrow up) or alt. failing that check your F keys above. one of them does the job. dont go into your system bios just escape if they come up the last thing you want to do is mess with them at this stage.Command promt needs attention to what you Yes and No on initial loadup and normal loadup seems to be asking too much right now. I had problems with certificates last month and what a pain after a decade of computing. all i can say is if you get your explorer up even offline go to tools/internet options/content/certificates/advanced and make sure your trusted sites are only microsoft trusted sites. Registry mechanic is a godsend for sorting out your registry instead of trying to handle it yourself.along with adaware and less worthy spybot and hijack this ware that should be used daily nowadays if using the net. In general startup disc i think is your answer. Failing your startup disk and windows 98 disk maybe consider a local P.C solutions company instead of formatting your pc and losing everything for $70 gluck |
